Although Sally wasn't the first woman to travel into space, her contribution is still historical as she was the first American woman to travel to space. As an astronaut, she performed tasks right along side her male counterparts. Back on Earth, she spent much time inspiring kids and adults alike, both male and female, encouraging them to learn more about space. She was a remarkable communicator. She died much too early. As I understand, before she passed away, and I presume she knew the end was coming, she worked tirelessly to ensure that the vision of the foundations she established would continue on long after she was gone.

Although this thread is a bit old, I too say RIP Sally Ride. My niece played Sally Ride in a school play last year (before Sally Ride died). So it made Sally Ride's story more personal for my family.
