LCS Freedom is a pretty neat ship, despite the continued controversy on battle-worthiness vs. whether its role is supposed to include engagements with significant large scale military threats. I think things will shake out as the weapons modules are developed.
I have had a love/hate relationship with the lowliest of the low, the 38 ft plastic PBR. On the creeks and canals of the Mekong Delta every day was a "good day to die". There were few dull moments on the plastic fantastic.
Historians are still surprised with how quickly The Bismark took out The Hood......Britain's finest warship at the time; explaining the concerted effort to Sink The Bismark".
Another Warship I'm keen on are the Zumwalt class(formerly DDX) Destroyers; 600 feet long and nearly 15,000 Tons, fairly large for a Destroyer but designed to help replace Battleships in defending our Aircraft Carriers and the Fleet....with approximately 80 Missile Launchers per ship.
Very "futuristic" design with impressive stealth capabilities.
I'm sure in the coming years that Mayport (largest naval base in southeast united states) will get many of these ships and when they do i'm hoping that they'll have ''ships tour'' on one of them as i'm really curious about how the Bridge looks and is set up etc. I'm sure that there will no longer be any Helmsman and Lee Helmsman position as it's probably all computer controlled as the ''Quartermaster of the Watch '' will probably just sit in a chair behind a computer screen and just punch in the navigational coordinates given from the Conning Officer .
That being said this new technology kind of takes the fun out of steering a ship while standing watch on the helm especially when going slow at 1/3 speed (7/8 knots) during rough seas as it was hell trying to stay on course all the while the Conning Officer is constantly barking ''Helmsman mind your headings"" .
