Wonder how long it will take for this to replace the Internet backbone?

Quote:
The present achievement indicates that transmission of one petabit per second (Pbps), capacity equivalent to sending 5,000 HDTV videos of two hours in a single second is possible over 50 km, which is approximately the distance between medium-haul telecom offices. This sets a new world record throughput over a single strand of optical fiber.

Who cares?

This is all one big circle jerk when it comes to data transfer speeds. How will greater speeds help in any way? Instead of watching American Idol in 1080p, it could be streamed at 5x the resolution? Instead of downloading porn in 5 minutes, you could do it in 5 seconds? More efficient masturbation equals a better world? lol

This is no different than a nuclear arms race; 100kt or 15k kt or 50,000 kt. What's the difference?
