As Robert L. Park pointed out in his book Voodoo Science, if there were gold nuggets floating in low-earth orbit, it would not be cost-effective to collect them. This has implications for ideas about space mining: what could possibly be worth enough to offset the cost?

That being said, unmanned flights are much cheaper than manned flights. Also, it's a much smaller deal when (not if) a rocket blows up during the flight.
