The “time machine” in question wasn't of the “transport me to May 11 so you can watch the FA Cup Final, remember the result, then return to present and place very large bet” variety.

Instead a man named Ali Razeghi said, according to myriad reports, that the machine could peer five or so years into the future and bring back news of events like whether you'll marry or or where wars will break out.

That was a classic science fiction short story. I just re-read it about a month ago... or is it that I WILL re-read it in about a month? Seriously, the story was set in a future Russia, where everyone else was "inventing" things like toaster levers and drawer pulls, and this one real inventor invents a "useless" camera that sees into the future. He sees his mate, meets her, and destroys the camera.
