By them saying it can make a trip from NY to LA isn't to imply that it will only go places like NY, LA, Shanghai, San Fran, Paris and so on... It is 100% simply a 5th mode of travel, cheaper than building roads, which means it will be able to go also to cities like San Diego, Atlanta, Austin, Salt Lake City, even places like Oceanside CA, Savannah GA, Trenton NJ, Santa Fe NM, and even outer cities like Carlsbad CA, Scottsdale AZ, Covington KY, Port Author TX, Columbia MD, etc...
It might take another 100 years to get it there, but you have to start somewhere in order to make that a reality...
The total vision comes from a 200 year old vision that scientists have been working on to build a massive web network of these hyperloop tunnels all over the place. It's really supposed to be kind of like the Jetsons, where they are whisked in and out of buildings through those little tubes. It's kind of like that. But if it is ever to get there, it has to start somewhere with a first line... Which would be the lines connecting the major cities first, obviously.
Of course, all this is under the speculation that his "invention" really works as the 200 year old vision wants it to
So it's going to stop in every single city, even smaller ones? How will it go that fast if it just has to slow down and stop within a few more hundred miles? Trenton is not even 100 miles from NYC, which will surely be on the same line, so how will it manage to be so quick and still stop? I got the impression that this Hyperloop crosses major cities only, which would make more sense considering how fast it goes and its price. Maybe I did misunderstand, but if it's like you suggest it is, I like this whole idea even less. If it will cross any city, big or small, then all we need is a normal train, or at least ones more like Asia and Europe's.

Even if it only stops in major cities, I could see the stations developed as hubs to allow a transfer to closer regional cities. For instance, you could take this contraption from Los Angeles to Chicago, then board a train to Milwaukee. If NYC <> LA is only 45 minutes, figure LA to CHI maybe being 30-35 minutes, then a 90 (?) minute train ride from CHI to MKE.
I think what some of the people mean is that there may be different terminals along the tube that your pod can evacuate the tube. It would not be making intermediate stops.
The OP makes a much more eye catching headline than I do, lol.
I think the real question about this technology is not if, but when. It is not far future tech, so when it becomes viable it will almost certainly be within our lifetimes and we will all use it someday.
This would be awesome. I hate flying and I hate driving even more. Being able to take a hour-ish long trip to Atlanta to see my family would be amazing.

Need help from a Physics nerd for this:
It is Sunday, and my brain is on hold ...
Time needed to accelerate to full speed ?
Time needed to decelerate to full stop ?
Convert to distance
This is the minimum distance this will work for,
if full speed is to be attained.
Any other distance less than the above, you never will attain full speed.
I agree, not able to do without more parameters.
In the end, nothing wrong with dreaming ...
The $100 price is an insult. It should be well over $1000.
