Quadcopters have become cheap and affordable and advances in technology allow cameras to be added to a device that just about anybody can fly.

So are they a bit of fun, or are they an invasion of privacy?

My neighbors have them and their kids are great and very responsible so it's never bothered me. Today I went to the park with my boy and a guy was flying one with a camera on it and it was clear it had a gopro on it and working (wife telling her daughter to smile at daddy's camera).

For the first time I found myself questioning if I really want some guy taking aerial pictures of a park with kids in it. Normally if someone's taking a picture you can see they are and can ensure you're not in the shot - this takes away that possibility.

Anyway, I figured it was an interesting debate on whether it's an invasion of privacy or just harmless fun?

Wouldn't it be the same invasion as a telescope or binoculars (think Gladys Kravits on Bewitched)?

To me, no. With binoculars you can't go over someone's house and look straight down into their yard from close range.

Cheap? I guess the cheapy basic one is like 500 bucks, but generally they run in the thousands of dollars. I hardly think they are going to go spy and film you in your back yard. The cheap DJI which the kid probably was flying has limited range and you need pretty good line of sight. I think they are really cool toys though. I looked into buying one. Then again it is probably a toy I will play with for a few weeks then end up putting it on ebay cause I never use it.

Usually, with a two story house you can see into your neighbors yard. Maybe not a total view, but at least half of it unless they have huge lots.

Looks like we are gonna have to rely on evil government once again to protect us
Laws might have to be passes to define the area above each house that those things can't fly in

I am sure laws will eventually be created because of safety issues. There already have been incidents reported from these things crashing and injury people or damaging property. Also most people don't own the airspace above their house so not much anyone can about that.

Some states, like Texas, are already regulating them.

You might be wary, apparently there are reported cases of middle aged men in vans with drones and cameras. They use the attractiveness of the toy drones to lure children. There was an entire hobbist group arrested with child porn and drone videoss

Bad people find a way to abuse ANY new technology. Overall, there are very few bad people. So the question you have to ask is, how much of your freedom are you willing to give up to TRY (note I said try, not succeed) to stop bad people from abusing new technologies? Not only is it typically a waste of government time and resources, but it also reduces everybody's freedom, stifles innovation and increases taxpayers' costs.

You appear to be interested in children in a unhealthy way.

Or, does anyone else see the Duck Dynasty men as members of NAMBLA as this poster states in the TV forum??
