The technology is here now and self driving cars will go on sale this decade, however, it will be interesting to see how long it takes to get to near 100% of the vehicles on the road. My personal guess is that it will be rather fast maybe a decade. That would put it around 2030 with about 100% of the vehicles on the road being driverless.

No you won't, because I'll be DRIVING my truck right past your little toy! I jump started FOUR of those little crap boxes this past winter alone.
Sorry Grandpa, but since you can no longer safely drive after your last stroke and your kids/doctor had the DMV revoke your driver's license, I will have to instruct my self-driving car to call the highway patrol to come and round you up, impound your truck and call one of your kids to come and take you back home.....to your rocking chair..........where you will wait patiently for your ride the next time.
I am. People end up hating others if they have to drive them around, I guess that's understandable. Robots and computers won't get mad at you, cause they're programmed to do whatever, and they're machines, so they can't get mad at you. Pretty sad it has to go to that. Relying on robots because people don't want to help others, so we have to build robots and program them to help us (that'd probably happen anyway, but that's not my point).

Once it starts happening we'll have very little say in the matter. Basically it will probably be a strip in the road that the car reads and drives itself to your preferred destination or it might be a gps based system or a combination of both. I suppose if i were a dedicated gear head this wouldnt be a system i'd feel comfortable with but for those who just want to reliably get from point A-B in your own vehicle i doubt giving up the control aspect of driving would matter much..

Kids are gone, I'm still healthy and physically fit at 53, so none of that's going to concern me for a long time. So I'll STILL be driving when you're BEING driven! Enjoy your junk.
The first almost has to be the long range trucker. Expensive labor easier environment with a good demand for a rather sophisticated device. Large trucks are more complicated and demanding than an auto.
But there is the pay off...you could even use drivers initially at each end. Save 7 hours of expensive labor on each trip from say Los Angeles to Las Vegas.
Then you go after the cabs.
Some simple things might help a lot. Put a beacon in each car...including old ones. Simple position and velocity and what you are...Maybe give them away initially but require them after a couple of years. Basically make the entire older generations partially compatible.
One need not solve the dispatcher problem. The traveling salesman can be entirely left out of the algorithms. You simply navigate from block to block. The game is simple avoidance. Move in the way planned while not hitting anything. These vehicles can be very agile in collision avoidance. They probably have time to both break and steer...well passed the capability of a human. In fact in slow traffic you can basically make a collision impossible.
For those without faith remember that airplanes make cat III landings...those are landings with virtually zero visibility. But who does it? The computer. The pilots role is to watch and abort if he sees something of concern....but he can't take over and land...he has to press the button and fly away.

I'd say about 5 years of self-driving cars on the roads with a flawless performance record and zero accidents, and the insurance companies will price liability coverage for FLAWED human drivers like you right off the streets, Gramps!
