Interesting, there's a European project and a US project approaching the same problem from different angles, both seem to get a fair amount of funding. I'm predicting that the US military will step up funding on our side of things, since it would have obvious military applications. It's really very troubling that given the ethical implications of this research there isn't stricter oversight.
Here in the United States DARPA is heavily invested in the BRIAN Initiative as the agency is well aware of the potential military applications that will arise from the research. Sure, there's the typical stuff like neural interfaces but the real scary stuff is Remote Neural Manipulation (RNM) which uses radio waves to hack a person's voluntary and involuntary body functions.
I suspect a lot of them object to the amount of computer science required in the approach. They want to tinker with brains, not computer models.....mostly because they dont have the skill set to develop software.
And its the software simulations along with a understanding of some of the underlying mechanics which is where most people see the breakthroughs coming.
