That concept was pushed in many sci-fi movies. Blade Runner for one.

3 June 2008, General Jacques Diouf claims that US$30 billion a year to enable 862 million hungry people to enjoy the most fundamental of human rights: the right to food and thus the right to life. The world petfood market is worth US$65.8 billion (in 2012).

So by this measure, the world cannot afford pets even today.

One advantage of having a robo-dog is that you don't need a pooper scooper when you take it out for a walk. No need to buy dog food for it either.

Yeh, but what happens when some wires get crossed and he keeps growling over, and over, and over, and over....
I'd figure a robot dog would be a lot more expensive to keep than a real dog.

Just take out the batteries and store the mechanical mutt in a closet or attic to be forgotten like Furbies.

Whatever.

My dog has been pretty expensive:

Surgery for a luxating patella $1,640

Dental - back teeth pulled $815

Grooming $90 every three months.

But i have a vasectomy so its my child. And I stopped spending money on hyper sexual, sociopathic, estrogen based parasites (note: not all women, just the ones in attracted to) a couple of years ago.

So I can afford to have a fur child.

And mine would still hang with me even if I was homeless.

A robot cannot replace a dog for company and loyalty. It doesn't smell like a dog. It doesn't need to be fed and it doesn't need to be walked. The walks for exercise, and the companionship are the primary reason for having a dog.
Robots will make good live-in maids and they will feed the dog and clean up the poop.

Agreed and thats why pet robot dogs will never become a big seller, be cheaper and less hassle to just pick up a rock and call it your pet.

Nice article that leaves out reasoning.
Stating " rise in global population" gives absolutely no indication as to why this would be so.
IMO, it was just very a poor lead-in to an article about robot dogs.

For those contemplating a future pet robot dog do you really think something like this will be a viable replacement?
