Get a new unit. At least in my area, FM transmitters don't work very well. If you insist on using FM, then get a FM modulator that is hard wired to your antenna.
I used a cassette adapter in my 2001 audi. It worked reasonably well.
I bought a Kenwood stereo for my Subaru Crosstrek, has the option of using bluetooth or USB. I agree with everyone else and just go out and buy a new unit. Carplay units might be a little more expensive unless you buy them at a discount.
I have a Pioneer unit in my Toyota car and Ford F250. Both have Bluetooth and USB and all the toys. On my pickup I have a backup camera. The camera is handiest when backing up to a trailer. It makes lining up the hitch to ball easy.
What you want is both USB and Bluetooth, because if the phone is connected to the radio via the USB port, it keeps the battery charged. There are all kinds of relatively cheap head units from Alpine to Kenwood, and everything in between that incorporate bluetooth and USB port in front. By the way, you want the USB port in the front.
I have seen adapter kits that plug in the back of your stereo unit. It uses the port for multi disk CD units. About $50
