Why is space exploration so important to the government?

It's winter time where I live (in Canada), and I thought of an idea for NASA to put it's use to. Why not collaborate with the fashion industry on making warmer winter jackets, since NASA knows how to make warm clothing, from their knowledge of spacesuits?

Right, because it was a stylish down filled jacket that kept them warm in the absolute vacuum of space. Had nothing to do with a pressurized space suit.
