Well, this is an interesting idea. Although I wonder, if it's true that this could "produce more than enough power for the entire world", how that power would get distributed. Seems like the better idea would be for companies that needed such abundant electricity to just site themselves there. Who knows, in 200 years, the ex-Sahara could be an urban manufacturing giant. Cue a science fiction author somewhere...

Distributing it is huge problem, you lose X amount of power over X miles. Kind of like having a water hose with a bunch of holes in it. You might have plenty of water at the source but eventually there is none down the line. If you want to supply the end of the line you need a lot of supply and much larger hose nearer the source.
