Doing things humans can't do. Greed and the need to cut labor cost aside, space explorations and many commercial endeavors would be impossible without robots and AI.
And my hope, to ultimately save the human species. Let's face it. Human biology is weak and severely limited. We constantly need to breath, drink, eat, and live in nice weather. We use up energy even when we are not doing anything. And we only live a short life. Robots, on the other hand, don't have these problems.
Some people fear that robots will overtake us. Since we had no precedent of this, I think Hollywood movies such the Terminators are the source of this fear. That speaks volume about the capacity of some humans to think independently or to think at all, but that's another subject.
We build robots and AI, teach them stuff, and guide them through times. This looks a lot like parents raising their children. And like young people who carry on the legacy of their parents, robots and AI will one day perhaps carry on the legacy of humans.
The uncertainty comes from creating machines that are more intelligent than us, in the way that humans are more intelligent than living non-humans. A horse will never understand algebra or capitalism, and the fear is we'll never understand an AI's processes or possible philosophy. If their way of thinking is so far above our comprehension, we'd be at the mercy of whatever AI machines decide, good or bad. How much of that fear is theoretical or imminent within our lifetimes (today's elderly or today's newborns) seems to vary depending on who's talking about it.

The answers to this are so obvious I’m not sure why you are asking.
Speed: computers can operate at enormously faster processing speeds for certain types of data
Accuracy: computers don’t get tired, or make the kinds of other mistakes humans do.
Cost: a computer can work 24/7 and does not require benefits, vacation, personal leave, etc.
Connectivity: computers can share a wealth of detailed information much more easily and thoroughly than a human can.
There are a lot of other reasons too, I’m sure.
And yes, I know, there are still things humans can do better and we should continue to perform those tasks. However, there are many other things we do that machines, especially machines capable of learning, can perform much better.
This is an old video, which I might have posted elsewhere on this board but it is enjoyable to watch, IMO, and still very relevant, even if a bit dated.

What is special about is it can understand things and make decisions on it's own. When you combine that with the extraordinary amount of calculations any computer can do you are off to the races.
Most humans can identify the letter A in thousands of different fonts despite the fact they never saw an A displayed in those fonts, this requires intelligence. A regularly programmed computer cannot do this, it can only understand exactly what you tell it. You need to input each letter A in every font and tell it that's an A. Assuming accurate input it's always right but it's limited to what you have told it. This of course requires a huge amount of work and becomes impossible if you want to tell it all of human knowledge. Even if you can get by the programming part the computing resources required are astronomical.
With an AI computer you give it 100 examples of an A and then program it to identify the rest of them. This may sound trivial but it's far from trivial, this is a brick wall computer engineers/programmers have faced until recently. Unlike a regular computer that is always right (assuming accurate input data) AI can be wrong. When it is wrong it doesn't file away the letter A it got wrong, it adjusts it's programming to get it right. In other words it learns.
As another example chess, in the 90's Deep Blue was able to beat the world's best chess players however this is not a demonstration of AI. That was a demonstration of brute calculation which is something computers have always excelled at. Fast forward to just recently, Google has a computer that first taught itself to play chess which itself is an extraordinary feat, it then went onto to beat the very best computational chess computer. The important part about this it used far less processing to do it. Don't quote me on the numbers but the computational computer calculated millions of moves while the AI computer beat it with something like 80K calculations. It was picking and choosing what calculations to make.
This technology and others that are emerging like 3-D printing are going to have significant consequences over the coming decades. 100 years from now people will view this era as we view the industrial revolution.
The chip/biological connection will be the next newest AGE.
Every human on this planet will be connected to the cloud and manipulated by
those investing in AI such as Google and Amazon to be eventually subjugated
to the bunches of copper wires and carbon components. It's bad enough we get
dope sick after putting our phones down for one minute. Just imagine how you
will react once the chip in your noggin freezes..........................ahhhhhhhhhhh.
