Why do you think DARPA projects are creating human like, bipedal robots then? The world we live in is designed for human shaped bodies, vehicles, equipment, housing, its all designed to be used by humanoid, bipedal entities, so of course it makes the best sense to create robots in the same way, many of these can be seen on Youtube videos, they do have a terminator like appearance.
And really I think the general public will accept robots more, if they are bipedal and humanoid in appearance, the more they look and move like us, the more they will be accepted.
The general public accept robots for numerous reasons. For example: pleasure (in the future), nursing (to take care of humans or animals), factory lines (to paint, to assemble, to move objects and things, probably to kill/ defend (eventually), to monitor and send an alarm (as in a property, a place, etc.), to mimic voices (sing, voices, sounds, etc.), for space exploration and sample gathering, for task assignments in environments that are harmful to humans and animals, and so on. But none of those functions are because of "self awareness." All those things are programable.

Right, we are not quite at the technological level to have the kind of robots that are 'self aware', we are getting close though, probably within the next 10-20 yrs. This will likely create an entirely new category and field in the robotics world.
Personally, I think this will be achieved by 'merging' computer technology and human biology, 'bio-ware' would be a suitable name.
poor robots. They have no blood, no soul, no guts, no glory. And now people want them doom them with humanity's problems: Fear, and fear of death.
This just gets more hilarious as time goes by, and yet the purveyors remain clueless. This isn't progress; this is a mockery.
Good points. And don't forged robots experiencing "cabin fever," all kinds of mental problems leading to suicide, and so on
