I just read an article that wrote about the UK having 300 Olympic size Pools worth of Nuclear Waste and they are planning to stick double walled metal containers underground. One only needs to look at Hanford Nuclear Reservation to know this has already been tried and failed. Nothing man is capable of making is figured to last as long as multiple thousands of years. I don't know why the governments of the world aren't working on technology to make vitrification a viable process. Mixing the waste with sand and solidyfing it into glass is the only stable solution.

It really underscores the arrogance and ignorance of man to keep pursuing Nuclear Energy when there has NEVER been a solution for the waste of the last 70 years. We must put a stop the Nuclear Fuel as an energy source and perfect the process of vitrification if we are to resolve 1000's of generations of a problem.

I worked on the Hanford Waste Vitrification Plant project from 1991 to when it was "suspended" in 1993. Since then, the project was "rebaselined" and restarted. Costs grew from $1.7B in 1993 to $16.8B in 2017 with a projected plant start date of 2023. I do not know if costs have grown again (surely, they must have) or whether the project is on schedule.

And I do not know if the issue of a permanent storage space has been resolved either.

Most folks do not realize that when the plant starts, it will generate TONS of additional high and low level waste as everything that liquid touches becomes contaminated.

Thanks BLM, I could imagine the difficulties such a process would incur and I have read about their challenges and expenses. I still believe it is a necessary study as I see no other viable solution.
There is no perfect solution other than the 100 already dead scientists who should have thought of waste challenges when they first came up with the idea to use Nuclear Fuel as a power source.

As has been said by someone anonymous (Not Einstein) "It's a hell of a way to boil water"
