The Large Hadron Collider is put in place for that particular reason to experiment the sub atomic make-up of the universe. I always thought that our reality in itself especially the third dimensional plane of existence is mostly empty space. The reason for that is from my understanding that everything is created from atoms, inside of an atom is 99.99999% empty space. Though in this article Rutherford has done an explanation with what is become known in the terminology of the scienc word as deep elastic shattering. Through this discovery to exhibit if there could sort of be an internal structure inside of an atom. During this high energy event the science community was shocked about wave-particle duality or how the make-up of the Universe experience wave-like or particle-like properties depending on the conditions exposed.

You can think of atoms as bundles of wave packets that are filling in that "empty" space. Quantum mechanics means that every particle is spread out in a wave-like distribution. They aren't just point-like objects.

....If they are in super position.
If they are within a body they are decohered .
Theres a certain limit where gravity has an effect and collapses the wave when the system reaches critical mass.
