Solar doesn't go far enough, and can't be used as widely as you seem to expect. You can't put the sun and it's rays inside a house, as one example. And even sticking solar cells on one's house is expensive; beyond what many can afford. And some areas have issues like hail to deal with, or too many clouds.

Practically and reality is what's "preventing" the massive switch you are referring to. It's nature and physics and economics. Not some group or movement or conspiracy.

Until some new arrangement comes along that can surpass our current ways, we won't see changes. It has to prove itself that it is better, and that's not the case (yet).
