They would be indistinguishable from what we would identify as Gods. They would be able to do things that we would call miracles. They would likely come in peace. They would be met with hostility. We would likely try to run them out of town. It's all happened before.

First of all I don't think aliens exist in the sense that Jules Verne and Hollywood depict. Alien life, if it exists, is likely just a bunch of viruses.

But to play along with the Hollywood game, let's have a tragedy where the aliens are peaceful, advanced, and altruistic. They establish a presence here on Earth and serve more as advisors than rulers. They teach us how to clean up pollution, grow crops without pesticides, and how to achieve peace and prosperity for all.

But the aliens are susceptible to a mutated form of virus usually found only in certain bats of Central Asia. While we sturdy, troll-like humans can withstand the virus with only a 0.1% death rate, the graceful and kind aliens are mowed down by the thousands. In the end only a handful remain, and they reluctantly take to their space ships and return to their home planet, promising never to return because our planet is just too toxic. Slowly, as the memory and teachings of the aliens fade, we return to our ways of war, with pestilence and poverty returning. The End...?

Hostile aliens looking for extra territory. Bombardment by asteroids of our major cities. Humans as slaves.

They would arrive and society would split automatically into two camps.

One half of people would start attacking and killing each other, blaming each other for this invasion and dishing out draconian laws to control each other. The other half would start buying toilet paper in a panic and then running and hiding.

We've proven we can't handle ourselves in an apocalypse scenario. We'd destroy ourselves like maniacs before the aliens even got started.

Pretty much this. It would be fast, happen in unimaginable ways, and over very quickly.

Why not? Earth has beamed out radio for well over century, television for what - 7 decades? If they had any interest in communicating with us, I don't see that as a hurdle for a race smart enough for interstellar travel.

No, the premise is an *invasion*, a hostile event.

The approach used would depend on their intent. Do they want to take whatever natural resources are available, without regard to whatever life there might be? Do they require/want humans to participate in the extraction of resources (slave labor)? Do they want to use the existing life as a food source?

Yes. Tell me more. (I promise I am not an alien looking for ideas.)

The amount of stars in the universe has been described as the amount of grains of sand on earth's beaches. It's an incomprehensible number but probably the best description I've heard that gives you some perspective. Assuming the start of life is some natural process the chances intelligent life has taken held elsewhere are enormous.

Realistically the only tech we would need is fusion, once you can build your own star everything changes.

Well, an invasion is a clear agenda. A visit would be something to work on...
