“This is the first time it has been shown that ethnicity is a huge component in determining what you carry in your mouth. We know that our food and oral hygiene habits determine what bacteria can survive and thrive in our mouths, which is why your dentist stresses brushing and flossing,” Kumar said in a statement. “Can your genetic makeup play a similar role? The answer seems to be yes, it can.”

Interesting. Now, what happens if you French-kiss (or more crassly, swap spit) a person of an ethnicity other than your own?

Obviously they now need to study the effect of diet on microflora...Are the differences due to genetics or to environment (diet)? Any bets?

The sorry state of the research funding process has many people studying the microflora at the other end of the GI tract these days...They all seem to be claiming variations in micro-flora influences our health...Isn't it much more likely that our health influences our micro-flora?...If we turn 100 bison loose in the Mojave Desert, will it turn into grassland?

Yes, that's interesting. We still have much to learn about our internal biota.
