How about saying that everyone will die during an ill-conceived mars expedition. Anyone going outside the protective atmosphere of earth will have their brains fried by solar and cosmic rays, during the long exposure of a journey to mars. Science needs to develop an effective radiation shield before planning a voyage to mars, that is lightweight enough to carry on a spaceship and is dependable.

This is one of those chicken or the egg things... should we try to go into space now or wait until we have the technology where we can just send robots up there to do all the building of the settlements and setting up of the infrastructure first? Frankly I support Musk in his endeavor. He's already done more to advance rocket technology than the world governments have done in decades in a very short period of time. He's spurred innovation in places I would never have expected. I think his name will be remembered as well as many presidents. Let history be my judge. I will grant you he's well capitalized thanks to an inflated stock market.

People who believe you will be fried by the van allen belt are the same people who believe vaccines have nano bots in them... more conspiracy nonsense and this is coming from a former/half conspiracy nut myself. Embrace change. Embrace progress. If we can keep the socialist utopians and communists from destroying our great mixed capitalist system, the future is a bright one.

Going to Mars is so far ahead of everything we've done before. Sure, it can look cool on paper. But the risks are significant. Musk might just happen to be a realist here. I'd rather have reality over hyped fantasy.

Of course there’s going to be a huge risk. He’s being a realist. Mars is a lot further than the Moon. I applaud Musk for pushing the envelope further. He’s currently sitting in a very good place, with all the goodwill thrown his away as a result of the successful launches to the ISS. The next objective will be going to the Moon. He was recently awarded a contract by NASA.

But the real question is whether people will be able to survive there. We have no guarantee that a child born in Mars gravity will thrive.

A contract that others are fighting because they want a piece of the Govt pie. Reminds me of Boeing and Airbus fighting it out over the next AF1 contract.

I'm also a fan of Elon - he's got some crazy smart people out in Hawthorne, all of whom are proving NASA and the old school contractors are a dying breed, dinosaurs in a modern world. Boeing can't get Starliner to fly right, I'm not convinced SLS will ever fly at all and the Webb telescope...well, that project should have been privatized long ago. At this point the only reason for it to fly is the absurd amount of money that would be flushed down the toilet if it didn't, pretty much the same reason SLS needs to slog forward at this point.

SpaceX has made rocket landings routine, the Falcon Heavy is a normal heavy lift now and Starship is well on its way to a full flight. Sure, no one denies the test vehicles like to crash and burn on the regular, but you don't see SpaceX scratching their chins afterwards, they figure it out, build another one with the fixes in it and launch again. NASA has a glitch and it takes years to fix, then they might think there's a better fix and do it all over again. I mean damn, how many times has Orion flown now? Another waste of NASA money.

I have zero interest in the whole Mars bs things, hell I'd rather go to church and I still think the "virgin" Mary was a $lut (prove me wrong!). Mars will cost literally trillions with zero benefits to mankind, it's another penis-size contest but this time it's not US vs Russia, it's Musk vs Bezos - so why should I care about their complexes? It's just empty planet with sandstorms.
