I cannot get Google Maps to give me voice directions. The icon shows voice is activated. I even have it pared to the car Bluetooth, but I do not get so much as a whimper. So, does Google Maps give actual detailed voice directions and if so, where is the problem?
It should. Press "Start" after you've inputted the start and end location, make sure it's "unmuted" (not alerts only) and make sure your volume on the phone is on.

I click on the I appreciate your response. I have done what you have said. I get a map route and a icon following my process as I drive to the location I entered. I used to have a Garman GPS and it would give me turn-by-turn voice directions. So, Google Maps is supposed to do the same?

Yes, google maps should do the same. I used to use Garman too, before I had an iphone. One time I had the same problem with the sound. I mistakenly had the "alerts only" setting on. The "unmuted" and "alerts only" button look similar. If you're sure it's on the "unmuted" setting, I'm not sure what the problem is. Hopefully someone more familiar with the app could help, assuming the issue is with your app and not your phone.
First disconnect the Bluetooth until you find the problem. Bluetooth won't solve anything. If you Google your problem, it will tell you to check the navigation settings. And you are aware there are several volume sliders?

This. Sort of. Bluetooth COULD BE the problem. So not using it is the first troubleshooting step.
Turn it off. Enter a destination in maps. Start the navigation. You can do this sitting on your couch. It should immediately speak the first direction.
Does it work?
Yes: BT could be the problem, or your car. Try removing and re-pairing the phone to the car. Delete on phone and car and then re-pair.
No: Something is wrong on the phone. Uninstall and reinstall Google Maps. Try again. No? Install a different maps program. Mapquest would be a good second choice. Try it. Voice? Problem is Google Maps. No voice? Your phone is the problem.
My wife’s iPhone encountered this identical situation. Google Maps had no sound, while the Apple default map app worked fine. We checked all the settings and they were all set correctly.
We tried to toggle the settings - no change.
Deleting the Google Map app and reinstalling it addressed the situation.
For years I could not get sound on Google Maps when using my Samsung androids in the car. For me, the trick turned out to be that I have to turn off the "Bluetooth" icon on my android, before even going to Google Maps. I don't know if this even makes sense, but it works for me.

Your volume is turned off. Go into settings and and sounds. Look for volume and you will see the settings. Make sure all are on.
