I've been an iPod person for the last 15 years. From commuting, going for a run, and working out at the gym, I've sworn by the Ipod. Because of its small size and weight, it's an easy device to have on you when you're using it. Also iTunes has always been easy to download free podcasts and maintain my music library to download to my iPod.

Unfortunately, times are changing and the product has been discontinued. I'm afraid more things will come obsolete and it's going to be harder to use an iPod in the years to come. I know most people today use wireless headphones that sync right to their Spotify playlist on their phone or some other similar setup. I've tried it in the gym but hate having to worry about charging wireless ear pods. I also hate lugging around my phone in the gym. There are also other cons that I haven't gotten used to yet.

My question is there another ideal alternative out there similar to the iPod where you can buy a pocket device and just download songs & podcasts from your computer?

Please have a look at Rockbox. It is a firmware that supports various mp3 players, such as iPods, long after the vendor has abandoned the product.

Currently they support the iPod 1g through 6g (Classic), iPod Mini, iPod Nano 1g and iPod Nano 2g. I'm not sure which one you have.

Sandisk still makes MP3 players. You can transfer music from your computer with a micro SD card, and play it to headphones via BT or wired with the 3.5mm jack.

I use workout and road work time to think things through in silence.

You could try it.
