Learning GIS software on my own time (format, systems)

Right now, my geography degree is collecting dust as I try to find work. Instead of sitting around, I was wandering if there are ways I can practice and learn about geographic information systems on my own time? I have experience with Geomedia and ESRI. I am most interested in ESRI since I have the most experience with that particular software.

I know that this an old post but I am in the same boat as the OP.

Anyone on here have any suggestions for myself and the OP (if he ever reads this thread again) ?
