Washington has an authoritarian streak in some areas that carries over to the police at times- like when they confiscate peoples' cars for prostitution.

Anders, I wouldn't worry too much of cops. As long as you act responsibly, you won't be bothered by the cops. I know these videos doesn't really help, but we live in an age where transparency is too amplified and we don't always see all the sides. For most parts, here there is a comfortable relations between cops and civilians. But there are times when cops just can't do right; either they don't do enough or they do WAY to much and the public will get very critical.
This isn't the first time police have mis-handled a situation where the "perp" was mentally unbalanced in some way. Cuts in services mean this kind of confrontation with police will be more common.

Ironic, isn't it? They're even more serious about parking!

Seriously, we walked NYC last year, and marveled at how the flow of traffic and pedestrians moved along, regardless of the lights. Then we sighed -- just another way that Seattle is so far behind the world, and thinks itself so advanced.

Sort of like the US, in general.

Sad but true. Where else can you enjoy the freedom of a beer garden at an outdoor festival surrounded by a chain link fence?

Why are there always people with video cameras when the police are around, but never when there's a gang shootout at Rainier & Henderson?

Probably because police stops 1) last significantly longer, and 2) rarely result in bullets flying? There's two good reasons.

Here's a third: if you are in a gang gun battle, are you going to pull out a cell phone or a piece?

"Can we get some better lighting here? I'm getting a glare off that storefront window. Everybody move down the block about 50 feet..."
