What are the cheapest stores in the Seattle area for fresh produce.
I've just moved here and have tried two stores (IGA in downtown Seattle and Safeway) and nearly fainted from the ridiculously high prices on fruit and vegetables (3.99 for round/butter lettuce?! 1.49/lbs for an apple?!).

Sure the junk food seems cheap enough but I mostly only buy fresh produce when grocery shopping so I need to find a store that won't bankrupt me. Is there anything like Aldi in the area?

Welcome to Seattle. Food is expensive. You get used to it.

People manage by going to Fred Meyer, Trader Joes and Costco.

There are a few really reasonably priced produce stores in the International district, around 10th and King. A little further south, McPherson's produce on Beacon Hill is very reasonably priced and fun to shop at.

Any place in the International District, or any Asian grocery in general.

The exceptions are Korean markets, which can get pricey.
99 Ranch is priced between the markets listed below, and your average Safeway/QFC, but the quality is off the hook.

Just in case you're apprehensive about shopping at an Asian market...
How do you feel about Fuji apples at $0.59/pound?
That's right, just thank me later

On Beacon Hill:
Foulee Market
Seattle Supermarket
ABC Supermarket
MacPherson's

Rainier Valley:
Viet Wah

A good strategy is get the ads for the big stores and make your menu using their loss leaders, stuff on the front page of the ad. Safeway, Albertson's, Fred Meyer and QFC are the ones you'll find everywhere.

Once again Ira500 beat me to it, but McPherson's is both cheap, fun and plentiful. It is frequented by many Asian and Hispanic families, so amazing selection. Especially great is the fresh fruit in the summer. Another place we buy lots of produce is Costco - may cost a bit more, but the quality is always good.

I'll give some of these a try. I'd like to go to a few of them today but after spending most of yesterday afternoon/evening stuck in traffic I'm not going to risk going out today and getting stuck again.

Costco is definitely out. According to their website they charge $50 per year for a membership just to shop there. Unless they are ridiculously lower than everyone else it doesn't seem worth it. I don't need to buy in bulk since I live alone.

CHeap produce - head to your local Asian grocery store (other than Uwajimaya).

And Costco can be ridiculously lower for produce, actually.
