I don't know that the 4x mark up rule always applies to finding a "reputable breeder". In our case, it was the one who had to advertise the least that had the dogs everyone wanted. No website, and pretty much waitlists people based on referrals from people she knows. She also has a lot of repeat business over the years and you almost have to know someone that knows her to get one of her dogs. She doesn't breed every year either. Only when she feels like she can improve the line. She was for sure not even close to the most expensive, especially for the reputation of her show dogs in winning Championships. Her price was the same for males and females too because she basically does not want others breeding her dogs down the line. You have to show a certificate of spay or neuter to get final papers. Anyway, just google "how to find a reputable breeder" and you will find a checklist. Our dog is just a family pet but her temperament is rock solid, her line is disease free (no guarantee but it helps) and I have to say, she is a darn gorgeous blond pup.

One suggestion:
Do not buy one from a pet store.

Before buying a purebred puppy, do some research into the typical hereditary problems incurred by the breed you are interested in. When looking for a breeder, make sure they do the proper tests to prove their sires and dams are clear of any of the typical problems such as hip displasia, eye diseases, etc. Ask to actually see the results rather than taking their word for it. Those tests are very expensive but give a new owner peace of mind as to health issues. Buying dogs from a REPUTABLE breeder is expensive because of the testing they do, expensive stud fees, expensive vet bills, and health guarantees. If you do not want to spend $1500 to purchase a well bred dog, go to the local rescue club for that breed. The reputable breeder will take back any of their pups for any reason. They have their own rescue programs too.
