I am looking for the pros and cons of working in downtown Seattle and living in Bainbridge. I've never lived in Seattle or the Northwest. I realize it is a 35 min. ferry ride each way and $90 monthly pass (no car needed).

Thanks for your input/thoughts!

I just moved to Bainbridge Island myself.

It depends on where on the island you'll be living. I'm within walking distance to the ferry, which cuts down on expenses since you'd just be bringing yourself on the ferry. Parking by the ferry will cost you about $9 per day (not sure of the monthly discounts available), and bringing your car across to Seattle will cost you ALOT more - nearly $400 a month.

The commute itself is very pleasant. There's coffee, food, bathrooms, plenty of seating, and orcas! I'm from NYC, where every mode of public transportation is loud, crammed & obnoxious. The ferry to Seattle is like a floating hotel by comparison .

If where you work in Seattle is walking distance to the ferry terminal and you don't live far from the Bainbridge terminal then as a foot passinger it can be a quiker and far more pleasant of a commute then if you commuted by automobile from the Seattle suburbs. No traffic to fight, and the 35 min. ferry ride is quiet and very relaxing.
If you are commuting by auto on the ferry, then it could be very expensive so that would not be recommended.

Thanks, I'm looking at leasing a place within walking distance of the ferry so no parking fees. Also I can walk from the ferry to the office in downtown Seattle.

Any general thoughts on the Winslow area in general?

What about commuting to Seattle to take in downtown things to do?

The Winslow area is very walkable. It's the main street of the island, with most services one could need.

Overall, Bainbridge has more of a quiet, small-town feel to it than other Seattle suburbs - despite how close it is to the city. Some parts of the island feel very nearly rural.

Certainly, besides work, most people also hop the ferry on occasion for shopping, concerts, etc.
