I am moving to Redmond from Indiana for about 3 months to work at Redmond. Around here in Indiana, the rents are usually $500 for a 1 bedroom apartment. I am not sure what is the nominal rent for a student. Can someone suggest some economical places to live around Redmond within say a 10 mile radius?

I was looking at Kirkland and Bellevue but could not really find places below $1000. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

To be clear, you're only going to be here for 3 months?

If that's the case, you're going to likely pay a premium for not signing a year lease. Your cheapest option will be renting a room with some folks but even then, your options will be smaller because you're not signing a year lease.

Check out craigslist, lots of people post rentals there. While 500~ or so is definitely doable for a room rental with a year lease, you may have to pay more with only a 3 month lease. It may be worth looking into extended stay locations to compare costs if you want something more private.

Yes. I am looking for one for 3 months. I can go beyond $500 too. Perhaps upto $600-700. I started looking for one on Craigslist now. Could you please let me know where I should be looking for extended stay locations? Do you recommend any specific locations that I can Google?

The entire Redmond/Bellevue/Lirkland area is nice, no need to worry about being safe. Look for places within a reasonable distance from work.
Rents for 1 bedroom run about double what you are used to, $1,100/month. A studio or room in a house is about all that you are likely to find for $600-700 unless real lucky, and most landlords would not want such a short lease. Any chance the people you will work with can help you find someone to stay with?

Your best bet is either craigslist or driving around and looking for "For Rent" signs. Seriously. A lot of rental inventory in the Seattle are never makes it online and is generally not advertised at all (outside of the sign on the lawn).

@bisjoe: I have yet to make friends at my workplace so unfortunately I don't know of anyone yet. I contacted someone from Craigslist yesterday so hopefully that deal works out.

@rabagley: What you say makes perfect sense. I heard this before from my friend as well. Thank you for the information. As a last resort, I will probably go around driving.

Where will you be working. At Microsoft they have groups where you could find a sublet. I would also check the grocery bulletin boards.

@nfdsouza2001: Oh.. I will be working at One Microsoft Way, Redmond. Would you happen to have any idea about where to find these groups? In addition, what are the grocery bulletin boards you mentioned? I never heard of them. Thank you.

Default Microsoft groups

These groups are open to employees of microsoft. The grocery stores are the local stores I would look at Fred Meyer in Bellevue and the Indian stores like Apna Bazar and Mayuri, If you Google them you should find the addresses.
