We are preparing to relocate to the Seattle Eastside area with our 15 year old son who will be entering his Sophomore year next September (2011). This thread has been really helpful so far, and we have gathered that the general calibre of the east side high schools is very high, and that the strong focus is (not surprisingly) on math and science.

We are naturally in favor of such strong academic and 'left brain' focus, but also believe in the value (and proven measurable benefits) of developing the 'right brain' as well with arts, music, etc.

Does anyone have any knowledge of or advice about art/music/performing arts programs in these high schools? In addition to the Eastside, any strong arts programs in Seattle proper?

Our son definitely learns best with a balance between the two.
Thank you!

Yes, both public high schools in Sammamish have good performing and visual arts programs. Eastlake has a very nice theater with full sound and light systems, don't know about Skyline but probably since it's a little newer.

In Seattle itself, the schools can barely afford books and teachers, you would want to become involved in none-school private art, dance or drama programs if living there. Other than Magnolia, Madison Park and Ballard, I would look at private schools if living in Seattle even for academics.

I know there is a strong focus on music in the middle school programs in the Issaquah School District so I am going to assume that it continues in HS. For example, as a 6th grader, a child must choose from the following as their elective for 6th grade: Band, Orchestra, Choir or Exploratory Arts (language exploration with French/Spanish, cooking, digital photography or another art and something else I can't remember!). You can go to the websites for each school and look at their course guides to see what kind of art and music classes are recommended.

Also, I would highly recommend Kaleidoscope School of Music in Issaquah. They have instructors offering all different kinds of instruments, voice, etc. They even offer a Heavy Metal class which they pair with a festival! Charles McCrone (the owner) is fantastic!\

Thank you both for those replies and info.
In Seattle, has anyone heard about the small magnet school called the Center School?
