I was just wondering how many people live in these downtown areas because I know that they've both experienced a condo boom over the past ten years and they also seem to have a ton of foot traffic (from what I've seen on google maps). I couldn't really find any information and if i did it was from the 2000 Census, which was before or at the start of this apartment/condo boom. Both cities seem to have thriving downtown areas, with many businesses and residents. I'm guessing they each have about 7,000-12,000 people. Am I right?

Default Downtown Seattle

Check this source out for Seattle:

| Demographics

It lists downtown as having 60,000 residents and lists the census tracts used to come to that number. I can't find similar info for Portland right now but I'm sure its out there.

The areas of Seattle listed as 'downtown' on that site include Uptown, South Lake Union, Waterfront, Belltown, Denny Triangle, West Edge, Retail Core, Pioneer Square, Chinatown/International District, Little Saigon, and parts of Capitol Hill, First Hill and SoDo. The number will be much less if you're just talking the core business/retail parts of downtown.
