My husband and I are looking to relocate when he finishes his second degree. We've been spending lots of time thinking this through to see what the best place might be for us. Right now Portland and Seattle are on the top of our lists.

My question is, what kinds of houses are predominant in the Seattle suburbs? We're trying to find somewhere with older neighborhoods - preferably craftsman style houses built around 1910-1930s. There seem to be a lot of these in Portland, which we love. Is there anywhere in the Seattle area you'd recommend we look to find that?

Thank you in advance!

Look in the city itself. The houses in the suburbs are usually quite new and not very charming.

Some of the older areas of suburbs such as Issaquah, Kirkland, and Redmond have a very few old homes that you might like but they are typically close to the business areas and therefore noisy with lots of traffic. Look at the outer areas of Seattle, such as Wallingford, Fremont, Ballard, Maple Leaf and Greenlake.

New? Most of the homes in places like Lake Hills and Eastgate are from the 1950s. I wouldn't call that new, but yes, they're newer than what the OP is looking for.

OP, you might have a hard time finding those types of homes on the Eastside.

The Eastside does have some homes from that time period. But it's not clustered together like the areas close to Seattle downtown.

Agreed about Wallingford, Fremont, Ballard, Maple Leaf and Greenlake. Also look into Lake Forest Park, Columbia City/Mt. Baker, West Seattle.

If OP is willing to expand her target area, Tacoma has a great collection of these homes as well.
