As someone who didn't grow up in the area I find Seattlites views on 'dangerous' to be hilarious (Oh No! Black People!). The Rainier Valley has a lower crime rate than my hometown and my parents and grandparents don't even lock their doors.

It must be newish then. It was there a year ago when we first went and walked around the neighborhood.

The supermarket near Othello station is a remodeled Safeway store.

All worthy of further investigation. My quick synopsis of each:

Georgetown: One of the oldest neighborhoods in Seattle. Cool old brick buildings. Lots of artists. Microbreweries. Good seasonal farmer's market. Lots of places to eat. Still, it has a lot of industry/office parks/warehouses nearby, so it's not usually thought of as a place where people live, even though people have been living there for 120 years or so.

Columbia City: Another hip older neighborhood. Lots of vibrancy and vitality, some awesome restaurants, but it's still a pocket of niceness, with less nice neighborhoods north and south. Seward Park/Lakewood is close by. Has the walkability thing going on. Terrific bakery in the neighborhood, a nice alehouse, a top notch Italian restaurant, and not far from Flying Squirrel, home of some of Seattle's best pizzas.

Seward Park: More residential. The park itself is amazing, and For shopping and dining, go to either nearby Columbia City or the commercial strip at 50th and Wilson, which has the PCC supermarket, an Italian restaurant, and a Caffe Vita espresso house. Lots of nice houses and great views.

Bryn Mawr: Residential, though Rainier Ave nearby has a decent restaurant( Lakeside Bistro) and downtown Renton is only a mile or two away. Some incredible lake views from both Bryn Mawr and nearby Lakeridge. The neighborhood gets an unfair association with nearby Skyway( because it shares a zip code), so that keeps home prices lower. Some of the houses in Bryn Mawr have larger lots.
