Investigation reveals major gaps in railroad security | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News | KOMO News

They need to be arrested and brought up on Federal charges for tresspassing on Railroad property....and trains do not have keys....theres also numerous safe guards in place. I'm guessing this isn't the first time they have broken the law?

Default Whew!

Thank goodness the media keeps informing people of these things! I didn't think it was possible to do that, but now I know! *rolls eyes*

I'm not a train expert at all, but what are the numerous safeguards in place? If the train is already "on" (like I said, I don't know anything about trains), what is stopping me from moving the train?

That was the whole point of the article. That anyone can step onto to the trains right now and go.

I understand that, except for the OP who stated that there are numerous safeguards in place. I can't tell if you're arguing in favor with me or not???

Well the Complexity of operating a train , the GPS system , and various stop guards.....certain buttons that need to be pressed will keep the train from moving. Also if A person was to run a red or yellow signal w/o permission the train would stop. The people in that article need to be charged with trespassing....its that simple...

You can't disable the automatic cutoff system? I thought the design for the red and yellow signals were for runaway trains without an operator? Seems to me if someone had intent to steal a train, it wouldn't be too difficult to just bypass the auto stop.

The GPS system of course is going to track the train, just like our airplane transponder systems track planes, but it still doesn't stop them from being commandeered.

Trespassing? Maybe. But parking a train and abandoning it with it still running is bad business. I'm glad that they did an article on it.

Runaway trains , its for normal operations , there are also electrical fields surrounding the trains and PTC / CTC you can't move a train without permission....they can stop a train from moving from the center... Parking a Train and Abandoning is no different from what Truck drivers do daily.... People need sleep , unless you want to have a derailment because of a tired crew? They don't even use keys anymore on trains... From a Rail Fanner / Future Engineer or operator stand point , this is normal and no one is in danger... KOMO didn't fact check , and broke the law...
