The area around the Westlake Transit Center is currently one of the worst in Seattle for crime. Just walk through there any afternoon as I do daily (don't hang around there at night). Pine street between 1st and 4th, either side of the street.

I was just down there by myself at 10 pm the other night waiting for the bus and was wondering why all my hackles were raised

Earl Emerson kicks azz.

JA Jance writes some good stuff too, the JP Beaumont series.

I lived in tukwila which is right next to seatac and I think that might be what you are talking about. We stayed at a pay by the month motel that was home to many a criminal. We had hookers and dealers knock on our door asking if we "wanted anything." It was awful scary never go outside by yourself kind of place. One afternoon I had some guy follow me on foot from the gas station around the corner. I thought he was gunna try and rape me, but when I went to the room where my hubby was he just hung out in front and then took off. I would never go back there. It was the worst couple months.

There is also the methadone clinic near there on senecca and summit. Alot of those people are just trying to stay clean but you always have the few who sell their doses or sell benzos.

I lived in an SRO in the ID and while there were plenty of shady characters (drugs, male prossies) around I never had an issue. It wasn't always the most pleasant place but it was interesting, convenient and really all I could afford. Plus great asian diner food til about 4 am at the Purple Dot. You could do a lot worse.

My best friend lives on Aurora now. The 358 bus is quite a spectacle. It might as well be called the social services shuttle. Parts unpleasant yes, but it's far from a war zone.

I think folks in Seattle need to take a deep breath and say "housa" or something, and take pride in the fact that it on the whole is a nice and safe city that doesn't experience the level of violence or crime that are endemic to many cities.

Seriously. I wait there frequently late at night. It should be cleaned up a bit just because it is the center of downtown, but there is no need to be scared of being there.

Under the Aurora bridge or I5 overpasses. Lots of people do it, huge homeless population here. We also have homeless camps, but I'm unsure which are or were the best/worst in which to live. Read up on Nickelsville.
