I think both of those questions will vary from team to team, from industry to industry. They have had no qualms about hiring people from other regions in the US to be software developers (though mostly people who weren't entry level from what I've seen).
If you were looking for an entry level secretary position, I doubt very much they would look to hire that outside of Seattle. Plenty of people local to hire for a position like that.
For positions in fields that are in high demand or specialized, they will go where they need to to find the people necessary to fill the position.
Just an FYI--
Amazon very much believes as one of their core tenants that whomever they hire, should be as good or better than those currently working there. That means that even your entry level positions are going to be very, very competitive. If you have very little experience, little schooling (if necessary for the position), or are looking at entry level, you don't have a great shot at the job. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try for it--just be realistic.

Hello everyone, sorry if this has been asked before, but the thread is 50 pages long - lol.

My wife is currently interviewing with Amazon and if she gets a good job offer we will be moving to Seattle. I was wondering about their policy on hiring spouses. I know some companies like to do it, while other companies don't. Will having my wife working there help me get a job with them?

thanks

Not in the sense it will earn you any bonus points. However, she will most likely be asked by the recruiter for referrals and there's your opportunity - if you don't already know an Amazonian.

Been reading through this thread over the last few months, but never posted, didn't want to jinx it! I went through the interview process (about 5 hour long phone interviews, and one 7 hour in person interview involving multiple people), and was informed the day after the final in person interview that they were interested in moving forward and hiring me into a position. It was a long and brain melting experience but it feels good now that it is done. I live in Dallas and they flew me to Seattle for the last leg and paid for the transportation and hotel and food. Took about a month and a half to move through the whole process.

What is the best way to become "employed" by amazon?

Other then applying at their website online.

a referral basically only guarantees one thing...that someone will look at your resume.

you can apply online and if you get lucky your resume will get picked up and you'll be considered for a job. but if someone refers you, you can be guaranteed that they are looking at your resume to see if they want to move you to the next step (phone screens).

if the person who refers you is your spouse, it doesn't matter.

if jeff bezos refers you, it matters...

I interviewed a month ago and received a call from the Recruiter two weeks after the onsite interview indicating that they wanted to move forward with an offer. The recruiter also mentioned that they were just waiting for a location and the start date. However, I have not hear from the Recruiter since then. How long does it normally take to get the offer after the onsite interview? Is this typical?

I got the call from the recruiter the next day that they wanted to go forward(on a Tuesday), and then two days later I had a call with the manager(on a Thursday) to make sure I didn't have any unanswered questions, and then talked with the recruiter again that day and told her the feeling was mutual. She told me that I should expect an offer letter my Monday(today) or Tuesday. So while I am still within the threshold provided, after reading all the comments I wouldn't be surprised if it took a little longer, especially with Friday being a holiday.

I will keep everyone apprised of any setbacks or delays, or when I actually get the letter, haha.
