We’ll be moving to Belltown and won’t have a car for a while. Are there hikes that can be accessed using public transportation from the downtown area? I took the bus out to Discovery Park the last time I was in Seattle and although it was nice and I’ll go back, I’d like something a bit more strenuous, at the very least some more options other than Discovery Park.

I've done quite some research into this, I don't have a car either. There is actually a website for this topic: Seattle Metro Bus Hiking

However, to get anywhere remotely 'wild' is very difficult, especially on weekends when commuter services are not running. Plus you'd have to be able to time your hikes really well to catch the return bus. All in all you'd have very little flexibility and I have come to the conclusion that Zipcar is a much better solution. I can only recommend becoming a member for the time you don't have a car. You can get one for a day hike on the weekend and the 180 miles/day limit give you access to a lot of places (you can go further but start paying for the excess mileage which can get quite expensive).

From Belltown you can walk a few blocks to Pier 70 near the Sculpture park and walk along the water past the grain terminal, through Terminal 91 and on out to the Elliot Bay Marina. For a longer hike you can bus to the Burke-Gilman trail.

Wonderful website. Exactly what I was looking for. We’ve been considering the Zipcar option.

The place we will be living is just a couple blocks from the Sculpture Park and are very pleased with the path the follows Elliott Bay. The Burke-Gilman trail is noted in the website SitoUK provided and is appealing. Looks like they are extending it as well.

Thanks to both of you. Great info.

Join the Mountaineers. Go on hikes with them. They always carpool to the trail heads and you'll meet a lot of people with similar interests.

Their hikes look fantastic and quite a bit more strenuous. I see they have a photography group too.
