Home & Garden | Autumn day spent planting bulbs yields spring flowers | Seattle Times Newspaper

"Autumn is when you plant early season beauties like crocuses, daffodils, hyacinths, scilla, snowdrops and tulips because they require a long period of cool temperatures to spark the biochemical process that causes them to flower in spring."

Well, now's a good time to time to get to know one of our local celebrities: Ciscoe Morris, the gardening genius. He makes appearances on King5 morning news, also has his own talk show and written many newspaper articles (many of which can be googled) and books. He's very knowledgeable about the whole PNW flora/climate, et. c.

Ciscoe will be at the Sammamish Ace hardware at 10am Saturday!

We grow tulips, hyacinths and daffodils in Sammamish, planting the bulbs about October. We have to cover them with 1/2" wire screen (rabbit wire) or the squirrels will dig up and eat. We also have some
Iris and plant them in early spring, and even water iris in our pond.

You may be surprised to see how many greenhouses are springing up around here, including mine (since last weekend) for vegetable gardens, to help extend the crop since our growing season is so short.
