Folks,
I am finishing up my IT degree and will be looking for work in Washington. Being retired military and almost 50 I am sure that I am "swimming" against the job current. That being said, a lot of the postings list a Washington State drivers license required. I would like to presume that they can mean "able to obtain a Washington State drivers license."
Comments please.
Thank you.
Ed

Depends on the job. Keep in mind that entry level IT positions like you're probably looking for are with managed services firms, which typically require on-site reporting abilities. Thus, a license and a vehicle. Your age certainly won't help you, but there's such a shortage of IT pros in this city (even accounting for how many are here) that it's entirely possible it won't matter.

"able to obtain" and "required" are two different things. Some jobs that require driving the first day are not going to hire someone without a license, while those that may require driving one day a month or so may be more flexible. Unless they are desperate for a qualified person companies are not anxious to hire someone, train them and then have to let them go if they fail to get the license. Your chances are better if you at least have a license from another state and a good clean driving record in hand.

Thank you both. I am currently licensed in Wisconsin so I presume obtaining a WA drivers license will be pretty much paperwork and paying the fee (once I live there).
I figured my age is against me so I plan on targeting government agencies, especially military bases like Naval Base Kitsap and Joint Base Lewis McCord. It is easy to me to get the secret clearance back.
Good day all...

If your degree is in programing, and you're familiar with Ruby, Java, and IOS, you'll be good.

if it's in a different area, then it maybe a bit harder, or you'll need to start at a lower rate and build up from there.

A Wisconsin license would be fine no matter where you go. Places just say Washington license because you're in Washington. So you've got nothing to worry about on that front.

Where do you live to where you'd consider commuting to JBLM or Kitsap, though? That's a hoof if you're anywhere near Seattle. If you can obtain clearance, Boeing might be a good place for you to look. We don't have a whole lot of government contractor reliant companies up here.

There would be no problem they just may want you to have your wa license on the first day of the job so you may need to start at a later date

Boeing is a great company to work for if you're ex-military. If you're good at thinking on your feet, improvising, and whatnot, plus a tech background, you'll do fine at the company. COnsider applying.

My love would be to work at Navel Base Kitsap and live in Silverdale. The other area that also looks nice is around Anacortes.
Thank you all.
