So, what do you think? Is it something that is just not talked about openly?

.. unspoken? I think the word's out, and has been since the late 80s.

A booming tech and high-skillset job market, combined with a unique city culture and moderate weather and stunning views are what attract a lot of people here. And all those are widely advertised.

Get in, take the money and run somewhere else ASAP. Thats the big unspoken reason. Only the suckers stay much longer than that.

In my experience the military is a pretty unspoken reason people move up here. There are how many Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines up here at a given time? Then think about the fact that most people change duty stations every couple a years, that is a large churn rate. Then once they are up here for the reasons mentioned above they fall in love with the area and either stick around or come back when their time is up.

If it's unspoken, then I haven't heard of it.

Maybe some demographics? I know quite a few people that have moved to Washington to get to an area with different cultural make-up. Mostly people from California/Texas that kind of equate living in those states as living abroad. Also know a few (ex-military) that stayed because the firearms laws aren't as restrictive as other areas (one from Massachussetts and a couple from California). One guy I know is contemplating moving to WA because he can have his car registered here, but in CA it isn't considered street legal.
Those kinds of reasons?

1. Money and conferred status via the media. The latter is a riot!
2. Mediocrity enjoys being coddled and the tech industry is filled with people who refuse to mature, regardless of Seattle's natural preponderances toward sing-song-along humming.
3. The secret racism that permeates under the Seattle-style concept of 'multiculturalism'. American Caucasoids feel repressed in many places like Cali, where the tech industry originated. Remember, alot of old-school hippies from the Bay Area relocated here due to 'cultural differences' back in the day.
4. Microsoft has accrued a lot of educated Indians to do their work since so many Americans (when competant enough) demand too much for so little. That has definitely filled up Bellevue, et. al. Also, the enormous immigration from many other places has finally reached the untouchable, pristine shores of the sanctified PNW. The citizens then proceed to cultivate #3 above.

Most native Seattleites quietly fret in horror in private but they can do nothing about the Great Inculcations of Libby Gates so they smoke-out, grimace and bear it the best they can.

@Hemlock140- I won't bother reading the reply of why you care or why you are still here. How about you practice some of that 'love of diversity' mantra your type spews? Oh, but reactionary disdain for those who don't polish the cloudy emerald of Seattle is so comforting, rolling as it does so fluidly off the keystroke?

I mean, I have not been to Seattle. But it just comes off to me as a city that a lot of people would move to if they wanted to "get away" from the rest of America and yet still live near a large city, if you know what I mean.
