Interesting article today in the Times. I'm one of those that misses the waterfront street cars, especially when I walk over the abandoned tracks twice a day. Great quotes by one of my favorite local CD forum members. Well put, Ira. I hope the exposure renews enough interest that people start to write/e-mail King County metro and the City.

I couldn't forget the waterfront streetcar if I tried. I worked there for 23 years. Seven years ago they were "temporarily" taken out of service because the Olympic Sculpture Park took possession of where the streetcar maintenance facility was and evicted it. A big to -do happened after this information was leaked to the public, because the streetcars were very popular. The Mayor Greg Nickels and then County Executive Ron Sims promised that the streetcar would come back, but neither elected officials nor transit planners really wanted it, because it was different, one of a kind. When they were shut down in 2005, I knew they weren't coming back, despite the bleats from the politicians. They figured that if they were "temporarily" taken out of service, people would forget about them, and eventually they could just disappear. That might just happen, sooner rather than later:

Anyone who thinks a 1st Ave Streetcar can replace a Waterfront line needs to walk up and down that cliff sometime.

It is a crying shame that a Gondola on the Waterfront is getting more study than putting back the Benson Trolleys. There will be more than enough room (how wide of a barren windswept plaza do we need?) to double track it so you can get reasonable headways and make it both viable transit line as well as a tourist one.
