I'd also suggest Gig Harbor for it's low crime and good schools. That's where my husband & I are looking. Google: House rentals in Gig Harbor and you should be able to find something. I found a good site that had some rentals both under & above $1,000...Let me know if you want it. Good luck!

I would stick with either Port Orchard or Tacoma for affordability. Gig Harbor is great if you can aford it...and not a bad commute to Tacoma. University Place borders Tacoma and has a good school district. That might be a good place to check out. There are parts of Tacoma that are nice (Brown's Point and Ruston) but I think the rents may be higher there. Sorry we can't be of more help. You may want to check rental listings on Craigslist in those areas and see what looks good to you.
