Just read a news story relating to Amtrak that said the Bellingham city government is considering a proposal for shipping coal from the Rockies through Bellingham. God, there's just no place they aren't willing to wreck to make some money. I've stayed in Bellingham and think it is one of the nicest places I've visited. Coal trains coming in nonstop to load freighters doesn't sound like any sort of improvement. For sure it'll mean a whole new class of resident coming in, probably creating law enforcement problems. Looks like the clock is ticking for those who like Bellingham quiet and serene.

I haven't really formed an opinion on this either way yet...but it has nothing to do with Amtrak.

Those coal trains will be operating on tracks that the BNSF owns and operates. Amtrak runs its trains in this area on BNSF owned tracks.

I think I heard that currently it's two coal trains per day, added to however many were already coming through. I don't think more trains coming through is going to greatly affect the types of people who move to this town, although a huge increase in noise might make a lot of people leave.

There has been talk of dust from the coal but the EPA would regulate that. If anything, it will mean additional jobs for people in that area. Two more trains a day won't add much noise.

Two extra trains wouldn't be a big deal, but I've heard it will eventually be a lot more than that. But I don't know for sure.

Sounds like a foot in the door to me. "Jobs". How many nice areas are going to be trampled in the name of that? Usually more about some distant billionaire piling a few more millions. Ireland is nearly bankrupt after a period of "job creation" by outsiders. I guess there will be other places. Like the coast of the Olympic peninsula.

Interesting story about a small town that got hit by an energy boom!

What the hell is your problem? You seriously need to seek psychiatric help if you feel the need to insult a town where you don't even live in a region you no longer live in. I hated living in the Nashville area but you don't see me going back to that forum all the time putting down a place other people like just because it wasn't a good fit for me.

In environmental terms, here's the OTHER end of the coal line, in Wyoming. They are decapitating the Rocky Mountains. To feed power plants which then spew carbon emissions. The terminal in Bellingham is to ship the same coal to China so it can do the same. Result? A few more million for the 1 percent. And this is what people think is so important.
