Hey, I am a 20-something, considering a move from Chicagoland toSeattle, and I'm wondering what neighborhoods to look in to.
A little bit about me: liberal, single, not super in to the night life, work in the foodservice industry, looking for a relatively quiet place, full of interesting, locally owned shops and restaurants, and people of like mind. Also, budget is of concern.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

I would look into Kirkland. Technically it's not in Seattle, but it's only about a 10 minute drive into downtown Seattle. Tons of small businesses, restaurants, and it's right on the Lake Washington. My GF and I love that city.

Since budget is an issue, I'd look at areas just outside the city: Rent will be much less, and you the commute won't be too awful.

Could you elaborate on, "budget is concern"? That's pretty vague.

From what I've seen, you either need to have roommates or live outside of the city in South King County (or maybe up north?)

I'm lucky in that I've been in my apt for more than a decade. Consequently, I'm 'grandfathered' in at a lower rent ($700); new renters are paying close to $800. I live in an older apt bldg on Eastlake: It's not a dive, but it's pretty bare-bones/minimalist.

$700 is about the limit I want to pay for rent, so I'm casually purusing rent prices in other areas. So far I haven't found anything decent in the metro area (within about a 5 mile radius of downtown) less than about $750-800.

Unless you're willing to live in a dive, I doubt you'll find anything in city in your price range. Good luck...

What area in Chicagoland are you in now? If you picked an area in Chicagoland to move to where would it be? That would give some of us familiar with Chicago an idea on where to direct you.

However after just looking for $700 rent I don't think you will get the city unless you do a roommate.

I agree. The only place where I've seen rents less than 700 a month is in the International District. And that's a pretty sketchy place at night. You could also live with roommates.

It's hard to even find a decent studio in the city for $800 or under. You really have to have a budget of $800-$900 to find a decent studio/1-bedroom in the core area. Remember that a lot of these places don't include parking and w/s/g in the rent either. I feel I lucked out with a small 1-bedroom on top of Queen Anne hill for $845 (including parking AND w/s/g).
