Hello all,

My husband and I are thinking of moving to the Seattle area but would have work in two vastly different areas. Any thoughts for a middle ground?

My work: Federal Way
His work: Bainbridge Island

I was thinking Mercer Island perhaps? What would the commute times be for both of us?

(Mercer to Federal Way, I'm guessing 45 minutes?)
(Mercer to Bainbridge, I'm guessing 1 hr 30 mins?) What is the best time to leave in the morning/return evening for this commute?

I also thought about West Seattle but realized that the Fauntleroy Ferry doesn't go up to Bainbridge Island unfortunately.

**Living in downtown Seattle would be too much city for us.

Cheers and thanks for any feedback,

Alicia

Can you even afford Mercer Island?

Honestly I'd suggest looking more south... like towards West Seattle, Burien/Normandy Park, Beacon Hill/Seward Park/Columbia city area, maybe even Renton. From West Seattle, your DH can take the water taxi to the Seattle piers and head over to the ferry dock (unless he has to drive?).

Only an apartment on Mercer Island potentially

He would need to drive to work on Bainbridge Island I think (4 miles from the ferry dock)...unless the company has a pickup service (we don't know that yet.)

Thanks Inkpoe!

Why not live on Bainbridge - avoids the high cost/hassle factor of driving on/off ferry twice a day. You could walk on ferry and take bus to Federal Way. Or live in Seattle - you don't have to live downtown - there are many neighborhoods in Seattle that would not be 'too much city'

I'd think living in Gig Harbor would be a better alternative than Mercer Island. From GH he could drive up the other side to Bainbridge, maybe an hour, and you would have a relatively short drive to Federal Way, maybe 30 minutes.

The commute from Mercer Island to Federal Way would suck unless you enjoy 90 minutes of stop and go bumper to bumper traffic.

I'd agree with Gig Harbor. Close to Federal Way, not too far from Bainbridge.

Just remember with the GH option, there is a one way toll.
