Hear, hear!! *applause* This is a no-brainer (I wasted my youth in Seattle, myself): Santa Monica! The beach scene is great for socializing--sun and surf are a college student's dream! Trust us: forget Seattle! Don't give it another thought! If you want a big city, LA is just down the beach from Santa Monica.

I really want to get into more things like skiing or maybe just riding my bike. I have become so lazy I hate it Mostly because I don't talk to anyone here anymore. I think seattle is my best bet it fits my budget I saw shared housing in capital hill for about 600 a month maybe california later on after I finish CC Again thank you all so much

I just moved to seattle from california. and I wish I had done it years ago. Califonia is in the toilet, it's nothing like tv and movies make it out to be. Over crowed, over priced, and just rundown buy a massive overrun with illegal immigrans and not enough goverment funds to take care of it all.
Classes keep getting cut from schools, crime keeps going up, especially violent crime like rape and assault. I could go on, a lot, but I hope you get the picture.

DomiDom, Best of luck on making a new beginning in Seattle. Biking and Seattle are big here and the mountains are really accessible. How exciting, this new chapter.

Funny. I moved back and it doesn't seem to be anywhere near as bad as you make it out to be...

The thing I remember most is South Bay hospital closing its doors....and then it was 45 min. to any hospital. Scary with so many millions of people in LA.

If you expect anything in life to be like TV and the movies, you'll be disappointed.
I was surprised and puzzled to find a thread here about all the crime around Seattle. Hard to believe, it must be just in certain neighborhoods, but there seem to be more of "those" neighborhoods than before.

I'd take Santa Monica any day, but...it's the OP's life. He gets to choose. Drop us a line after you get moved and settled in, OP, and let us know how things pan out for you.

A combination of obliviousness, and naivete can account for that. Especially if you factor in the money modifier. No matter how bad the region you live, if you have enough money to say keep yourself in a privileged neighborhood, say, Beverly hills, it's easy to isolate yourself in a upper-class world.

I'm afraid you've missed the point by a country mile ma'am.

Oh, I may be a lot of things, but oblivious and naive? Absolutely not.

In any case,

To an extent. I lay my head in BH, but I don't socialize here at all. The whole pompous Beverly Hills crowd just... pisses me off. It's nice, clean, safe, and quiet here, but I can drive 4 minutes or ride my bike for 8 and get to the nightlife.

I was literally broke and jobless when I moved to LA initially and it's been a decade coming that I am where I am now - my family was educated, but extremely poor - like, electricity and water getting shut off, food-bank poor, and I moved 3,000 miles to get as far away from it as possible. Not that anyone wants to hear my story or anything... but, regardless: CA, specifically LA and SF, have been great for me. Seattle? Not so much, after I returned as an adult. I'd hoped it'd be another step closer to my long-term goals, but it just ended up being a detour that put me right back where I was a year and a half before. But hey, that's life. It's been about three years now since I moved back; don't regret it.

The attitude that CA is a sinking ship filled with illegals who ruin everything, that it's full of inescapable and pervasive crime, is just as much a TV-based stereotype as the Hollywood "glitz" that people are always deriding.

While I am glad you are enjoying your experience there more than most, the fact that you can afford to live in an aloof upper-class area like Beverly Hills demonstrates that you are not firmly in touch with the reality there.
Fact of the matter is that if you have enough money, you can live a charmed life pretty much anywhere, a lot of rich Americans retire to 3rd wold countries most of us would be afraid to visit, but they got the money to make life very good. So that really undercuts the premise.

Second, with all due respect, you must be somewhat oblivious and/or naive to not see the situation on the ground there. It is not a stereotype, it is the living, breathing amalgamation of all the experiences of myself and tens of thousands more who have fled California in recent years.
