Hello! I wanted to get opinions on a few things about my upcoming move. I have a job on Mercer Island and I am trying to decide if I should live on the island or in Seattle. I don't want a commute longer than 30 mins. and I would like to live near grocery stores, shopping (Target), outdoor parks, and a quiet community with neighborhood coffee shops, eateries, ect. I can afford a rent that would be $1,000-$1,200. Any suggestions is appreciated

Target is in Issaquah, as short 10-15 minutes from MI via I90. On the other hand, you will find it hard to get an apartment there for twice your budget. Seattle will have some studios for that and the bus is only about 15 minutes from the tunnel
to MI. The kind of neighborhoods you described would be higher and farther away in Seattle, though and get you to about 25 minutes. The only Targets in Seattle are downtown at 2nd and Pike (new), Northgate and White Center. Of those Northgate will have the best prices on apartments but probably 45 minutes to MI with no traffic.

Hemlock obviously must be having a brainfart... He forgot about the Target in Factoria (Bellevue) which is just virtually minutes away from MI. And also another Target in the Renton Landing (exit 5 of i405) which is less than 10 mins from MI.

Mercer Island is another suburb, very convenient to both Seattle and Bellevue. With your budget, I'd suggest looking into Renton... maybe near the Landing. Factoria could work, but quiet doesn't really describe it (unless its night-time)

I was checking out the Greenwood/Ballard locations this evening. Found some rentals near the price point, may have to go up a bit.

Ballard may be more than a 30 minute commute at rush hour to Mercer Island.

Well, you don't have a Target on Mercer but you can get to the one in Factoria in about 10 minutes. The restaurants/coffee shops are limited but you have the grocery stores, great parks and a nice quiet community right here on Mercer without the commute.

Thank you for your opinions everyone! Keep them coming. We are basically looking for a nice neighborhood that is no longer than a 30 min. commute to Mercer. We are a couple that likes to have cook-outs, wine with neighbors, DVD nights at home, and an evening coffee at the local coffee hangout. We like parks and quiet walks on the streets. I like the idea of being near/in Seattle, but don't really need the big city nightlife/busy lifestyle. I like the idea of being able to take a short ride to Target or a movie theatre and not fight traffic for it. Based on this, any parts of town you have an idea would be a good pick for us?

Have I missed something? Why not just live on Mercer Island? The savings in time/money/sanity to avoid any commute will be well worth it.

That is an option, but we're "open" to others. I don't mind a 30 min. commute (gives me a chance to unwind to music before coming home and make grocery stops, ect.). From what I've researched, Mercer is very expensive and I have found some cheaper options in Seattle. With that said, it probably would even out if I just lived on Mercer with gas, car repairs, time, ect. More than likely, I'll probably end up on Mercer, but just wanted to hear other opinions out
