I've been itching to escape BofA for awhile now and tried out ING. Hate it, they've driven me crazy. I've heard the local banks here are pretty good but don't know much about specifics. Can you recommend any?

I really just need very basics. To be able to deposit checks and not have them held for two weeks and not be charged for debit card use. I generally don't use ATM's unless I need to deposit. In general looking for one that processes things fairly quickly - or at least within a week

BECU is wonderful and fair. May want to have a look at Umpqua Bank, very ethical approach to business and banking.

Why is it so great, though?

Full disclosure, I don't work for BECU but do have an account there, like 775,000 others. No bank is perfect. BECU and other credit unions are not for profit, seem to have a good network of atms in our area. I have never received any double talk from them, I find that they don't charge any unnecessary or hidden fees, their credit card rates are quite reasonable. Over the years, a number of my clients have used them for home mortgages, again rates and fees quite attractive.

I think just about any credit union would work - they're all definitely better than banks. I think anyone in Seattle can join Seattle Metropolitan CU; they're probably as good as any.

I 'bank' with WA State employee credit union and they've been great.

Just have to throw it out there and agree, BECU. Anyone can join as long as you live in Washington. Most banks charge fees for everything including breathing unless you have direct deposit, money in savings, one brown and one green eye, stand on one hand while patting your belly at the same time, etc.....
