I'm renting a house next summer in West Seattle for business. I typically stay on the east side either in Bellevue or Issaquah. I know nothing much about the area. The town house is right near the junction. Is it a safe area? I'd like to fly out my wife and kids for a bit while I am there. What are the must do things in general area (I know the downtown area well). Cafes, restaurants, bakeries etc. I know the beach is near by, is it something the kids would get into (they are teenagers). How long would it take to get to downtown (Westlake)?

Thanks for any advice!

The beach is really crowded on hot days, but that normally will only be July 5th through August. That is a great area, and safe. The only trouble will be the commute. Getting from West Seattle to Westlake means either driving on the bridge to I5 or 99 (all crowded, with truck traffic and trains) or taking the water taxi, then walk to the bus tunnel and take any bus to Westlake from the Pioneer Square station.

The Rapid Ride C Line (Metro) bus takes 16 minutes from the Junction to downtown (3rd and Pine). Alki Beach is nice, the area is safe, and fun.

The Junction is my nearest business district and I spend a lot of time there. West Seattle is just where I happened to end up in Seattle and after much exploring it has turned out to be my favorite part of Seattle. Alki beach is great. It really has the vibe of a California beach town in the summer. It feels like its own little world, and West Seattle almost feels like its own small town. Husky Deli has great homemade ice cream (nutella flavor is delicious), Elliott Bay Brewery has several locations and one is on California Avenue right there and they have good beer and great food. Bakery Nouveau, Easy Street Records, and Cupcake Royale are worth a visit too. Just up the way from the Alaska Junction is the Admiral District, which is also worth checking out. They have some excellent restaurants there.

What time of day would you have to go to Westlake? Do you need a car while you are there? I would highly recommend taking the RapidRide bus if you don't need a car downtown. From the Junction to downtown it's very quick and very easy. It operates in its own bus lane most of the way towards downtown from the Junction and Metro has a smartphone app that shows real-time arrivals for the buses to make catching them more convenient (less waiting). But if a car is necessary for you, the commute isn't too horrible. Outside of rush hour, I have had little trouble ever getting into downtown via the West Seattle Bridge and SR-99, and even during rush hour it is usually not that bad. If I-5 and SR-99 are really backed up you can also exit onto 1st Ave S or 4th Ave S and take one of those routes up to Westlake.

Thank you all for the great replies. The blog is awesome! I have a pretty flexible schedule (I am doing interviews of potential employees to start an office out there). I'll have a car, but would rather use the buses or ferries. I am just not as familiar with the area as I am other parts. My kids want to come spend a week with me while I am out there, so I picked someplace close the water this time for them. Thanks again, and if you can think of anything cool that a couple of teenagers could do with their mom and dad, please feel free to post!
