Hello,

I was wondering if edible mushroom picking is popular in the PNW? I googled it and one or two mushroom hunting clubs popped up. I'm originally from Poland and it's a pretty popular hobby over there. During season, you can get buy chanterelle mushrooms for a buck or two per pound, Whole Foods here in FL sells them for $32.99/lb...crazy.

Yes, very popular. There are so many edible varieties. But there is also a strong commercial side to the hobby. So, people that find areas out here tend to be tight lipped regarding location. You'll see roadside mushroom buyer stands pop up along the highway. Some of the popular ones are chanterelles, morels, chicken/hen-of-the-woods, oysters and even truffles. The commercial pickers get very territorial and will guard 'their' areas with whatever means necessary. Many travel from out of state, so you'll see an area's population increase and the shrooms disappear.
The buyers here usually pay $26-$28 /lb for chants, but it changes due to supply. This year's drought lasted so long that the chants were scarce but should be out in force next week.

Yes, I know many people who go up in the Mt. Si area just for mushroom picking. I have a friend who's got lots of acreage close to Mt. Rainier and he's training to his dog to hunt for mushroom. Pretty awesome, especially since he also has property up in the Cle Elum area, now that the fires are gone, it's ripe for excellent mushrooms. Especially for truffles.

But please be sure to know exactly what you're picking up. I think it was last year it was reported in the news a man went picking and just his luck, he picked a poisonous one and died from eating it.

We are plagued with mushrooms in the lawn much of the year, but I would never attempt to eat one, leaving that to the experts. We recently discovered the "Hen of the Woods" at a rather expensive restaurant but have yet to find that one in any stores.

I used to hunt boletes and chantrelles in Tiger Mountain. It's good tk go with foraging groups. meetup.com has some groups for mushroom hunting. There is also the Puget sound mycological society that functions from the UW campus. Each monday, they have a professional mycologist who will identify any mushroom you bring to them, so you have piece of mind for safety. Not sure if they still do this, so you should check.

Cześć Cleopatra!

Witamy w Seattle!

Don't know much about Mushroom hunting in these parts, but I did enjoy collecting in Województwo lubuskie when I lived there. My favorite was this one: https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czubajka_kania

Otherwise check out this resource
Puget Sound Mycological Society | Events | Annual Wild Mushroom Show

Wanted to share this resource also.

Unfortunately I missed the mushroom show this last time...
